Complaint #11
Last year i moved back into the area and defaulted to using AT&T as my long
distance carrier.
My wife signed up for the 7 cents a minute program which began in
March. Everything
was ok until the April bill arrived and wonder of wonders the 7 cents a
minute rate had been replaced
by some ridiculous scheme right out 1970 where we were being charged 50
cents or more per
minute for daytime calls.
I immediately called the useless 1-800-220-0300 number and was shunted
about their faceless
phone computer system for a while until I hit 0#. For those of you that
don't know, many systems
will get you out to a real person by hitting 0# or * or some
combination. I usually refuse to deal
with phone computer systems because they are set up as gate keepers where
many people give
up and go away before their problems are resolved.
In any case, I got through to an AT&T representative that told me nothing
could be done, that I was
on the ridiculous plan and would have to pay, and no she didn't know how I
got put on that plan.
Finally after spending more than 40 minutes talking to this person she
switched me to someone else.
The second person informed me that I had been "crammed" which as she
explained it was the phone companies
way of screwing their own customers and switching them away from the good
plan onto one of the expensive plans.
This practice should be illegal but for some reason it is not. She hung
up on me after that. I called back
and finally made them promise to refund my money (still haven't got it) and
put me back on the 7 cents
plan.
You can protect cramming/slamming by requesting PIP protection from your
local carrier. I now have this in place.
In October I finally got tired of waiting for
a refund. I've switched to a very inexpensive company called ECG.
The latest is that after cancelling my AT&T account they lost my check. I
had to issue another one.
Just today Jan 26, 2001 I got another bill from these morons for 26 cents
for an incoming call. This is
on an account that was closed 3 months ago. I am furious with this
company. They will probably be out
business within five years. I know I sold my 2000 shares of AT&T. I
suggest if you use them for long
distance switch immediately. If you own stock, sell it.
AT&T SUCKS!

THANK YOU FOR LETTING PEOPLE KNOW THEY ARE NOT ALONE!!
My complaint about this disreputable company is a bit
different.
I live in a small community about 75 miles northeast
of Dallas, TX. Here, we have not had access to any
kind of high-speed connection. Verizon, formerly known
as General String and Can, refuses to offer their DSL
service here although they advertise it highly. Last
July, 2001, AT&T brought a big,shiny motor home to
town to promote their wireless digital broadband. I
should have remembered that if something sounds too
good to be true, it probably is. I signed up and was
connected on Sept. 8, 2001. Two months later AT&T
started telling their customers they were going to end
the service and that they would reimburse the cost of
reconnecting to basic telephone service in exchange
for their equipment back.
Those few folks one could talk to, could only read
from their prepared scripts and could not answer
simple, logical questions.
In this community of 16,000 people, AT&T signed up and
installed over 500 subscribers. Most just took what
was offered.
I would have had to purchase a file server, router and
LAN for home use to go along with about $2,000 to get
a commercial broadband service.
Now, I must be satisfied with a "high-speed"
connection of about 49,333 or less.
The long-recognized name of AT&T is no longer
trustworthy.
We need a consumer-oriented service not unlike the
credit reporting agencies to let the rest of the world
know about unscrupulous businesses like AT&T.
Thanks again for providing this forum.

Complaint #13
This may sound like a petty gripe, but it has annoyed me enough to get me
to cancel my AT&T service after being their customer for over 15 years.
I just got my long distance bill, which was noticeably lower than it has
been in recent months. However, included in the bill were about $12 worth
of collect call charges made to my number on April 28. The calls were made
from two separate pay phones a couple of towns over from where I live. The
calls were made within five minutes of each other. I am housebound, and I
am the only person who ever answers the telephone in this house. At no
time did I accept any collect calls from anybody locally. The only collect
calls ever accepted on this phone are from my daughter in New Hampshire. I
live in California.
I called AT&T to straighten this out, and the representative said to me
that they might be willing to believe it on one call, but not on two.
Particularly as the second call lasted three minutes, while the first
lasted only one minute. I asked her: "Are you calling me a liar?" and she
said that it seemed very dishonest of me to deny the calls.
At this point I told her to close my account with AT&T. I informed her
that I will be taking my business to MCI, as I have never heard them
accuse a long time customer in good standing of lying to them.
I didn't accept those calls. And when I pay my final bill to AT&T, I will
absolutely not be including the amount for those calls.
